Which country has the best drivers?

I’m not sure but I think the answer to this simple question could be rooted on the method of assessment that an aspiring driver has to go through to get a license.

I know a country that allows some people to just take a written test to get a license without actually driving a vehicle.

What type of drivers do you think do they have?

How a driver gets a license could determine what kind of drivers will be found on the streets.

Here is where ASSESSMENT comes in...

The summative aspect of assessment involves the method of assessment used.

Therefore, I believe that QUALITY is greatly related to ASSESSMENT.

Let’s say there is a new method or program that is being formed.

Its efficiency is diagnosed by proper assessment.

Going back to getting a driver’s license.  Is merely taking a written test enough to assess a person’s ability to drive?  I don’t think so.

How about engineers?  Will oral narration of formula in class be enough to determine their ability to apply critical thinking?

As I said, ASSESSMENT is related to QUALITY.

But also keep in mind that PROPER ASSESSMENT creates GOOD QUALITY.

When it comes to learning, educators and learners should be aware of their goals.  What do they want to improve on by the end of the course?  Why are they in that class anyway?  What are the criteria to pass the course?  Both parties should be aware of these so they could pay more attention to the important matters.

Educators should be able to monitor the development of their students during the course as well.  This is done by various sorts of assessments; tests, recitations, feedbacks, etc.  As I already mentioned, different situations may require different methods of assessment.  Aspiring educators should be aware of this or else their learners won’t flourish to the fullest.

As we can see, there could be various experimentations first to undergo in order to finalize a learning course.  Numerous assessments must be undergone even before a subject is included in a curriculum.  I suppose this is the reason why syllabus could change through time.  Education bodies should continuously assess on which assessment method is most effective.  They should also be aware if they are over-assessing learners because that can’t be good too.

Bottomline:

Is ASSESSMENT essential?

DEFINITELY.

May I use the formative vs. summative chart you created in a powerpoint I am creating for training fellow teachers who are learning how to assess projects through Project-based learning?
